FILMS OF RESISTANCE: LONDON
14th of June at Genesis Cinema, the first Films of Resistance screening
Dear friends,
The last few weeks have been quite a journey. We kickstarted Films of Resistance, a global film screening initiative in solidarity with the Palestinian struggle, and found dozens of people reaching out to organise screenings of their own from LA to Canada to Lithuania to Italy to Taiwan to Indonesia.
Decentralising this, we’ve created a handbook for anyone looking to organise a screening. We’ve got some designers coming in to set up a tool kit, and more film programmers joining to figure out more films. We’ve been digging and connecting, and trying our best in figuring out the best way to have solidarity with and give support to the cultural intifada, to continuing to centre Palestinian voices, and to give space for conversation, mutual aid, and sustainable resistance to oppression.
With this, we’d like to invite you to the first screening this Friday at Genesis Cinema in East London at 6.30pm, featuring Mohammed Almughanni’s award-winning An Orange from Jaffa (2023), Dina Naser’s One Minute (2015), Mahasen Nasser-Eldin’s The Silent Protest (2019), Ibrahim Handal’s Bethlehem 2001 (2020) and Waseem Khair’s 120 KM (2021).
Films of Resistance believes in the power of cinema to expose, inspire, reflect, and reframe; its ability to incite and sustain resistance. As such, the initiative seeks to facilitate long-term, sustainable and active resistance to the genocide and oppression of the Palestinian people, by fundraising for Palestinian cinema. At the same time, it seeks to inspire solidarity, compassion and ultimately global action in support of the Palestinian struggle.
As a decentralised resource, the initiative invites collectives and individuals worldwide to organise film screenings showcasing the best in recent Palestinian cinema, with the proceeds going to support Palestinian filmmaking. Through curating a selection of over a dozen films that can be screened globally upon filmmakers confirmation, Films of Resistance stands in solidarity with the Palestinian struggle through film that is accessible and globally transferable.
There are still some tickets left, so come and bring a friend.
with love and solidarity,
